Men’s Section Report (May)
If April was the gentle easing in, then May marked the point where the season properly settled into rhythm. We were treated to a month of excellent weather, allowing cricket to be played in consistently good conditions, and giving players across all four teams the chance to find form and build momentum early in the season.

Across the club, there is a growing sense of cohesion and purpose developing within and between squads, with performances, availability, and support for one another all contributing to a positive overall picture.

Men’s teams
The 1st XI continued their strong push towards the promotion places with four wins from five, seeing off Wellingborough Indians, Kettering Town, S&L Corby, and Podington in a month where disciplined bowling performances set the tone. On multiple occasions, the attack was able to apply sustained pressure and break through batting line-ups effectively, twice bowling sides out for under 100. This was complemented by an energetic and committed fielding unit, who consistently helped build pressure and restrict scoring opportunities. A standout performance came at Podington, where Jake Spencer produced an excellent 5-wicket haul, removing key opposition batters and helping secure control of the game. With the bat, captain Ben Harris contributed two important half-centuries, providing stability at key moments in innings where it was needed most.

There is a clear sense of continuity and growing confidence within the group, with results being underpinned by collective effort and a strong team environment.

The 2nd XI opened the month with a high-scoring encounter against Desborough, where skipper Adam Massey produced an exceptional 193, an innings of real control, power, and tempo that set up a commanding team performance. Later, Fahad Ahmed’s 53 was particularly valuable in helping the team reach and defend a competitive total of 183 against Overstone Park. That match was ultimately sealed in memorable fashion, with Massey delivering a hat-trick to complete a well-earned victory. It was a decisive spell at a crucial moment, reflecting both leadership and impact under pressure, and was enjoyed by the travelling support who were treated to a spectacular finish.

As May progressed, the side encountered a mix of results, but there were several important contributions that underlined the depth within the squad, and the ability for multiple players to make notable contributions.

With rescheduled fixtures and bye weeks reducing opportunities, the 3rd XI featured in three matches during May but still produced a notable highlight. Against Isham’s 1st XI, Cav Robinson played a superb unbeaten century, anchoring a controlled and confident batting display that ensured a strong team performance. It was an innings built on composure and consistency, setting the platform for a convincing result.

This team will be looking forward to getting more matches, to help establish a rhythm that will enable the strong core to kick on further.

The 4th XI continued to grow into their season, with May seeing a strong emphasis on integrating younger players into senior cricket and giving them meaningful responsibility within matches. Youth system graduates Jack Sanders Denham, Cameron Johnston, Caleb Tew, and Jacob Horsey all became regular contributors, gaining valuable experience while also making tangible impacts with bat and ball. The month ended positively with a win against the ONs, where the young group played a key role. Jack Sanders Denham (44), Caleb Tew (52), and Jacob Horsey (67*) formed the backbone of the chase, while the youngsters contributed five wickets between them to help secure the victory.
The immediate benefit is clear: this group is already influencing results at senior level and providing real depth to the club’s playing resources.

Across the Club
A key strength this month has been the availability of players and the way squads have supported each other across the club. Training attendance has been strong, and there is a clear willingness from players to step into different roles where needed, which has helped maintain consistency across all four XIs. The collaborative approach between captains has also been a positive feature, ensuring players are developed appropriately and teams are supported effectively week to week.

Looking Ahead
June brings a fuller fixture schedule and, typically, a clearer sense of where each side is settling in terms of their season trajectory. The platform built in May is a solid one, and the focus now shifts to maintaining consistency, continuing strong availability, and converting promising positions into sustained results across all teams.
